What to Know About the New Vaccine
The purpose of the vaccine is to reduce the likelihood of developing severe illness, hospitalization, or death from infection. As of 2023, COVID-19 is still a major cause of serious respiratory illness with more than 200,000 reported deaths since January 2022 alone; where an analysis by the CDC suggests that making its vaccine recommendation universal could prevent 400,000 hospitalizations and 40,000 deaths in the US over the next 2 years.
The most recent vaccine is known to protect against a sub-variant of Omicron called XBB.1.5 which dominated the US from November 2021 up until earlier this year. Also known as the 2023-2024 vaccine, it is the only up to date vaccine generated to provide immunity against majority of the COVID-19 XBB variants – which are the most transmissible ones yet. This vaccine has been approved as of September 2023 by the FDA and is now publicly available by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna for all individuals 6 months and older.
