Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that can affect people of all ages. It typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms in healthy adults and older children. However, RSV can lead to more severe respiratory infections, especially in infants, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In severe cases, RSV can result in bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) and pneumonia. RSV is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is a significant cause of respiratory illness, particularly during the fall and winter months with endemics between November and April, with a peak in January and February.
